Madison's Notes!
The name of my bacteria is Arthrobacter Globiformis. Arthrobacteria have two main stages in life. When they are young and at the beginning stages, they are small, Gram-negative, and rod-shaped. After a couple of days, Arthobacter Globiformis become short, and Gram-positive. They become jointed-rods or coccoids. They do not have a flagella. They are obligate aerobic bacteria and coryneform bacteria. They are organized by pleomorphism and gram variability.Arthrobacter Globiformis are soil bacteria. They tend to form colonies on blood agar, but are mostly found in many different soils.
Arthrobacter Globiformis help reduce chromium in soil. There are two differrent types of chromium: Hexacalent and Trivalent. Hexacalent chromium, the more toxic type, causes irritations in humans and works against agricultural pesticides. Arthrobacter Globiformis can grow in Hexacalent chromium. It breaks down some of the Hexacalent chromium and makes it less toxic. Sometimes Arthrobacter Globiformis even change Hexacalent chromium into Trivalent chromium. (The less toxic form of chromium).
Arthrobacter Globiformis work with Streptomyces to create a synergistic relationship. Together, they degrade the organophosphate insecticide diazinon. They then use diazinin as energy and carbon. Thus making a synergistic relationship.
In 2003, the anaerobic growth and energy metabolism of two Arthrobacteria were tested. Arthrobacter globiformis used both nitrate ammonification and lactate, acetate, and ethanol producing fermentation processes to create anaerobic growth. Only nitrate helped anaerobic growth in the other Arthrobacter, nicotianae.Rrespiratory nitrate reductase activity was found in both Arthrobacteria. Neither bacteria used the electron acceptors. Nor did they use fumarate, dimethylsulfoxide or trimethylamine-N-oxide.
Arthrobacter globiformis need oxygen. Arthrobacter globiformis have created oxygen independent growth tactics so they can survive in periods of oxygen limitation while they are in top layers of soil. Arthrobacter globiformis need nicotine, nucleic acids, and different kinds of herbicides and pesticides in their metablolism. They are also pure respritory and do not depend on fermentation.
